The Firmihin forest on the Diksam plateau is the densest surviving stand. Individual trees and smaller groves are visible across the interior and around Homhil.

The resin, historically traded as dragon's blood, oxidises to a deep red when the bark is cut. It has been used as a dye, a varnish and a traditional medicine.

The IUCN and UNESCO record raises grazing pressure and a drying climate as serious threats, with too few seedlings surviving to replace ageing trees. It is a live conservation concern, not a historical one.

February and March are widely given as the strongest window for flowering, though this varies year to year.
