Shuab Beach

Quick answer

Shuab is a beach of white sand and clear turquoise water at the western tip of Socotra. Trips reach it by boat from Qalansiyah, along the cliffs, and spinner and bottlenose dolphins are often seen on the way. It is a day visit, usually on day seven of an eight-day circuit and on the same day as Detwah Lagoon.

Shuab (also written Shoab, Shu'ab or Shouab) is at the western tip of Socotra. The beach is powdery white sand, and the water is clear and turquoise. Trips reach it by boat from Qalansiyah, along the cliffs. Visitors swim and snorkel, then return by boat the same day.

The name also belongs to a village, Shoab, which is the point marked on maps.

The boat from Qalansiyah

Boats to Shuab leave from Qalansiyah, a fishing port in the west and the island's second-largest town. Qalansiyah is the only settlement besides Hadibo that most visitors see. The boat runs along the cliffs to the beach. Itineraries list the trip as weather permitting, because the boat depends on the state of the sea.

Dolphins on the way

Spinner and bottlenose dolphins are the two species visitors usually see from the boat between Qalansiyah and Shuab. Mangroves are recorded on the same run, and so, rarely, are whale sharks.

Operator species lists routinely record the Socotra cormorant at Qalansiyah and Shuab. Despite its name, it is not endemic to Socotra. It breeds on islands in the Gulf and the Arabian Sea, and it also nests at Detwah Lagoon. The species is listed as Vulnerable globally.

In the water

The water at Shuab is clear, and a day here is for swimming and snorkelling. On a natural-history tour in February 2025, snorkellers recorded more than 119 fish species at Dihamri and Shuab, along with octopus, turtles and rays. Four species of sea turtle have been recorded in the waters around the island: green, loggerhead, olive ridley and hawksbill.

Shuab Bay also has a dive site on a steel shipwreck, the Sunrise wreck, at 25 to 27 metres. Our diving expedition includes two dives on a wreck near Shuab, for certified divers.

How it fits a trip

All five of our packages include Shuab, and each one visits Detwah Lagoon on the same day. On the classic eight-day circuit it is day seven: west to Qalansiyah, the boat out to Shuab, and the last night beside the lagoon at Detwah.

The three-camp expedition goes out from its base at Detwah and is back for lunch, with the afternoon free or spent in Qalansiyah. The hotel-based tour covers Detwah and Shuab in one day from Hadibo. The 15-day expedition spends a day on the beach, and the diving expedition dives here before camping at Detwah.

When the boat runs

Whether the boat runs depends on the sea, and no sea-state or wave data for Socotra has been published. Boat trips to Shuab are among the first things a swell stops. The boat type, its capacity and its safety equipment are not published either, so ask about them when you enquire.

April has the lowest average wind of the year, about 11 km/h, against about 47 km/h in July. Several operators name February to April as the best window for the boat. From about May to September the monsoon closes the island.

The old seaport at Kosh

Shuab is also the site of Kosh, a probable ancient trade seaport. Uncontrolled construction that began there in 2022 compromised the site. The same year, the rock-art site of Maoriq Dessfarr on the southern plateau was destroyed during a land dispute between communities. Weeks before those losses, on 1 March 2022, Socotra had been nominated to the World Monuments Watch, one of 25 sites.

The nomination noted that the island's cultural heritage was under-represented compared with its natural heritage. Socotra's World Heritage listing, from 2008, covers its biodiversity only. No source describes what can be seen at Kosh today.

There are no bookable tickets for Shuab Beach, here or anywhere else — Socotra has no independent travel, so every visit happens as part of an operator-led trip with a sponsored permit. Our expedition packages all include it.
