The price gap in this market is absurd. A comfortable Socotra trip runs under $3,000; a UK luxury operator sells the island from $20,000. Almost nothing sits in between, and the physical product for the middle already exists — one operator prices its luxury-camp supplement at $1,150 single or $1,850 per couple over a standard tour. These are real numbers, not a “from” price, and they are indicative until we confirm them against live availability for your dates — the flight rotation and the permit both move. Socotra is a cash-USD island: no working ATMs, no card acceptance. Bring $500–800 in small denominations, and note that only crisp notes from 2009, 2013 or 2017 onwards are reliably accepted.

Pattern B — private, in the three fixed camps
We do not print driving times. Almost none are published by anyone and the two figures that circulate could not be attributed to a source, so we would rather leave them out than invent them. Walking times below are the ones operators publish.

EastThree nights at the eastern camp between Erissel and Arher. The dunes at sunrise with nobody on them, snorkelling at Dihamri, the Homhil plateau, and the Hoq Cave walk or a morning out with the fishermen — your call on the day rather than ours in advance.

South crossingThe southern crossing at your own pace: the Defarhu canyon, the Zahek dunes, camel if you want one, and Digub cave. Up onto Diksam in the late afternoon and down to the forest for dinner.

CentreFirmihin at first light and again at dusk, with the middle of the day spent out of the sun rather than driving. The mountain village, the dragon-blood nursery, and the forest to yourselves in the two hours that actually photograph.

The lagoon and the boat
WestTwo nights at Detwah. A private boat out to Shuab along the cliffs, spinner dolphins on the crossing, and a dinner set up on the sand. The lagoon at low light is the best hour on the island and most itineraries are driving through it.

If the flight does not come
If the flight does not come. In January 2026 roughly 600 travellers sat on Socotra for about a week when the rotation stopped. It is the clearest risk on the trip, and the written terms across this market are all over the place: one operator charges $100 per person per day and says plainly that no cash refund will ever be issued for a cancelled flight, offering only non-transferable credit; another promises a full deposit refund; two put every extra night entirely on the traveller; one is silent on force majeure altogether. Travellers who were caught in January 2026 have publicly described recovering money by bank chargeback after being ignored, and being billed with no cost breakdown. Ours: if the return flight is cancelled, we keep the ground arrangement running — accommodation, food, vehicle and guide — and we bill extra nights at cost, itemised, with no margin added. We will send you that in writing before you pay anything. Ask any operator you are comparing us with for the same, and treat a vague answer as an answer.

Frequently asked questions
Is there Starlink or internet at the luxury camps?
We do not promise it. One operator advertises satellite internet as a paid extra at these camps. Three competitors selling comparable camps in the same three locations describe solar lighting, candles and oil lamps, and one states explicitly that this is all there is. No review, photograph or independent report confirms it working. If connectivity matters to your trip, tell us and we will establish what is actually possible on your dates before you book.
What makes this worth more than the Comfort Camps trip?
Privacy and pace. Your own vehicles, your own chef, the three camps to yourselves, a private boat, and a day that is decided in the morning rather than published in advance. The route is similar; the experience of it is not.
Why is it so much cheaper than other luxury Socotra trips?
Because the gap between a good Socotra trip and a luxury one is smaller than the pricing suggests. How many people?
Six maximum, and it works best at four to six. Below four the per-person cost of private vehicles and a dedicated chef rises steeply, and we would usually point you at the Comfort Camps trip instead and say why.
Can we fly a drone?
Ask us and we will find out for your dates. Sources on Socotra's drone rules genuinely conflict — one traveller reports no restriction, another source prices a permit at $100–150 — and we are not going to publish a permissive policy on a question we cannot settle.
Is a private bathroom really private?
A private shower tent and a private toilet tent at each camp, for your group only. It is a canvas structure on the sand, not a bathroom, and we would rather you pictured it accurately.
What happens if the flight is cancelled?
The same policy as every trip we sell: the ground arrangement keeps running and extra nights are billed at cost, itemised, with no margin, confirmed in writing before you pay.
