Reefs that almost nobody dives, in a sea that shuts for a third of the year. What is actually possible here.
Socotra sits in a productive stretch of the Arabian Sea, and its reefs see a fraction of the traffic that reefs in the Red Sea do. Dihamri on the north coast is the established base, a marine protected area with a shore reef you can snorkel straight off the beach and a campsite alongside it.
Be realistic about the infrastructure. This is not a dive destination in the sense that Sharm or Dahab are. Equipment, air fills and certification requirements vary, accounts of what is available conflict with each other, and there is no recompression chamber on the island. If you intend to dive rather than snorkel, get written confirmation from your operator of exactly what is provided before you commit.
Snorkelling is the straightforward version and needs almost nothing. Dihamri, Rosh and Shuab are the names that recur, and turtles and rays are common.
