Arher is a beach on Socotra's far north-east coast, where white sand dunes climb the cliffs and a freshwater creek runs into the sea. It is the most popular spot on the island and its busiest overnight camp. Trips usually visit it on the same day as Hoq Cave, and on eight-day itineraries it comes anywhere from day one to day five.
Arher, also spelt Erher, Arhir or Arhar, is on the far north-east coast of Socotra. White sand and turquoise water lie below dunes that climb the cliffs, and a freshwater creek crosses the beach to the sea. It also appears in some sources as Irasel camp.
No coordinates are published for the beach or the dunes. OpenStreetMap marks a campsite named Arher 480 metres north-east of Fikar Spring.
The dunes and the creek
The dunes are white sand piled against the cliffs behind the beach. Visitors climb them, and itineraries time the visit for sunrise or for the last light of the day. The creek at their foot carries fresh water across the beach to the sea. Paragliding is flown at Arher.
A reviewer in 2013 found the beach poor for swimming, with a rather strong current. On the classic eight-day circuit the swim that day comes earlier, at Ras Irissel, the island's eastern tip, and the dunes follow at sunset.
The height of the dune
No survey or institutional source gives a height for the dunes at Arher. The figures in circulation come from operators and reviewers, and they do not agree. One operator describes a sand dune of more than 100 metres. Another gives a height of up to 250 metres, and two reviewers say up to 200 metres.
Camping at Arher
Arher is the island's most popular overnight spot, and the main camping area often becomes crowded in the peak months. There are no visitor limits anywhere on Socotra. Arher is not one of the island's six eco-campsites: crews bring the tents and put them up. The same 2013 reviewer wrote that it was like camping by the scenic road.
No source confirms toilets or showers at the standard camps here, so ask about facilities for your dates. One operator sells a fixed camp at Arher with canvas toilet tents and showers, and no other source confirms those facilities.
Hoq Cave on the same day
Hoq Cave is on the same stretch of the north-east coast, and trips usually visit the cave and the dunes on the same day, with the cave first while it is cooler. The entrance is about 350 metres above sea level. Inside, sailors and traders left more than 200 texts and drawings, most of them in the Indian Brahmi script. Every group goes in with a local guide from the nearby village, under a community access arrangement that the fee supports.
How trips use Arher
Trips on a moving camp usually reach Arher late in the day and sleep there, with sunset on the dunes. Trips based on the east coast camp near Ras Irissel instead and drive over for sunrise. On a hotel-based trip, Arher is a day out from Hadibo, combined with the Qaria lagoon and Homhil. On the diving expedition, the first day goes from the airport straight to Arher, with time to climb the dunes before the light goes.
The coast from Halah to Erisel
The joint UNESCO/IUCN mission of May 2025 found that more than 70 per cent of the coastal land on the eastern seaboard, between Halah and Erisel, now carries reservations and walls. It also recorded a new tourism camp near Erisel, the village by Ras Irissel, that contravenes the 200-metre coastal construction ban. An earlier IUCN mission, in 2014/15, gave the setback as 150 metres. Across the whole island, the 2025 mission counted at least 86 illegal or unauthorised land encroachments in a single week.
Visiting
- On eight-day trips it comes anywhere from day one to day five, usually with a night at the camp.
- Usually paired with Hoq Cave on the same day, with the cave first while it is cooler.

There are no bookable tickets for Arher Dunes, here or anywhere else — Socotra has no independent travel, so every visit happens as part of an operator-led trip with a sponsored permit. Our expedition packages all include it.
